[theatrical release Fall 2001] might be in trouble? 2000

Tomb Raider [theatrical release 06.15.2001]

Cast:
Angelina Jolie, Iein Glen, Jon Voight, Noah Taylor.

SYNOPSIS: Angelina Jolie(Lara Croft) begins the moving destroying an evil robot and bringing it back to her house where her mechinical technician, Bryce, works on fixing it. She then goes upstairs to take a shower and get dressed. Followed by that, she realizes what day it is, May 15th, the day her father passed away 14 years ago. It is also the first day of the alignment of all 9 planets. Lara wakes up in the middle of the night to the sound of a clock ticking, and breaks into a room downstairs; breaks into a wooden box and removes an old clock. The next morning, she smashes it open with a hammer, only to reveal a mysterious round glowing "key" which is counting backwards.

Lara takes the clock to an appraiser and en route runs into the token old flame character that stole an object from her in the past. They exchange supposed witty remarks and are off. The appraiser -- an old man who knew Lara's father -- says he doesn't know what the clock/key thing is but reccomends she meet with a client of his.

Lara then goes to meet with this client(forgot his name) and he tells her that this clock is amazing and he can't beleive she didnt bring it with.

We then cut to Lara at home, practicing ballet hanging from the ceiling on bungee cords. She falls just inches above the ground and sees that their is an intruder break in. She then flings back up and stands on the chandeleir as about 15 bad guys in black with guns fall through the ceiling. She then begins kicking major ass, taking all of them out. She then procides to go find the key so that they don't steal it, but she ends up in her garage. Bryce hooks up with her and tells her where they are in the garage and she kills them with some sort of weird looking gun. At one point, she gets on her motorcycle and grabs a TMP and kills more bady guys and then whacks one of them in the face with the wheel of the motorcycle. Pretty cool stuff.

The next morning Lara gets a package from a friendly product-placement-UPS delivery man (where again more "wit" is used, as the driver looks around and sees the mess from all the broken windows and bullet holes and asks what happened, and Lara replies "I just woke up this morning and decided that everything had to go."), which turns out to be from her father, which is a poem, which leads her to a book in the library, which leads her to a hidden part of the book she cuts open, which turns out to hold a letter from her father, which tells her where to find the 2nd key, which leads her to Asia (Singapore, I believe, don't recall), where token evil guy already is with a troop of Asians trying to tear down a Buddha image, which then gets torn down to the sound of their cheering, Lara finds the back entrance, a ghost girl spirit leads her to the room with the key, evil guy and hench men (along with her ex-flame from earlier scene) make their way to there, evil guy finds place to put the key, Lara finds the REAL place to put the key, Lara shouts to them and they don't kill her and instead toss her the key, she puts it in, jumps on and "rides" a giant swinging phallic symbol which busts open a globe of goo, she grabs the first triangle piece, rock/cement stone monkeys come to life, guns are fired, a giant six-armed statue comes to life, Lara crushes it, then she flies away on the claws of a rock gargoyle (!?!?) where it mysteriously explodes ouside, dropping her, and she runs off into the jungle, where she then meets a Buddhist in town who helps her place a call, where she then meets another Buddhist in a temple, who gives her tea which removes her gunshot wounds instantly, Lara eventually meets with evil guy in the throne room, then meets him a SECOND time and gives him the triangle piece and agrees to cooperate because if the triange can become whole then she can bring her dead father back to life, there's a LOOOOOOOONG scene (almost as long as this review!) of them travelling to the artic, and traveling, and traveling some more, finally reaching an ICE temple (very creative, nothing at ALL like the first temple, a TROPICAL temple!), where there's little three-by-three-foot "time storms" all over the place, where Lara finds the place to put the key and she gets sucked into a giant globe then spit back out with the 2nd half of the triangle, where the cult leader gets killed by evil guy, and Lara's old flame is killed by evil guy, and he commands her to help him put the triange togeather, and she figures out the puzzle and puts it togeather, and in a total "Contact" rip-off she has a conversation with her father, and he tells her to destroy the triangle, and she goes back to just before her old flame is killed, and she "turns" the mid-air knife around in the opposite direction so that when time resumes it kills evil guy instead of old flame guy, and she shoots a bullet at the triangle (which is supposedly made of metal from a meteor long ago and is stronger than steel) and it explodes, and everyone leaves, but evil guy -- on the ground bleeding to death, barely able to speak and on his deathbed -- shows Lara her clock with her mother's picture that he stole from her, so she goes back, has the token "final fight" with him (where his previous state of on-his-deathbed is seemingly reversed and he fights with the vigor of a tiger), and she wins, and leaves, and skates out this ice passage using her shoes and dogs pulling her. (whew!)

The final scene shows Lara in a dress, at home, with the butler holding a silver tray with a napkin over it. They eyeball Lara in a dress, then pull the napkin off revealing two guns -- she grabs them, the robot from the beginning comes to life, and it freeze frames Lara mugging her "I'm a bad-ass" mug as it fades out and rolls to credits.

CAST: Angelina Jolie as Julia Russel, Antionio Bandarras

SYNOPSIS: In 1880 Luis Antonio Vagas (Antonio Banderas) arrives in humid and exuberant coast of Santiago de Cuba, bringing with him a passanger that will change the life of this man forever.

Besides from enjoying all the richness and respect from all high society, Luis still yearns for somebody to share his life and richness...until one day receives a letter from a young lady: Julia Russel (Angelina Jolie) from Wilmington, Delaware, who responded from an add that he had published in a newspaper from Baltimore saying: "Looking Long-Distance Wife." The same day that they meet in the harbor of Santiago, the two stranger join in marriage despite the skeptisism from friends and associates of Luis. But Luis believes more in companionship more so than love. What he wants is a very good "wife;" a stable and kind woman who will bring upon support.

Luis gets a big surprise when he encounters a beautiful and sensual woman, who resembles not so much her own image which she had sent with the letter. Julia explained that she had decided to send a picture of her sister, because she didn't want a man only interested in her beauty. Luis, also confessed that he had written in the letter that he was just a worker at the coffee plant [which he is the owner of] to avoid women only getting interested in his money.

At first only marriage unites them, but little by little desire and passion sets in. The more Luis gets near Julia, more enigmatic she becomes. With time more contradictions come up about what she had written in the letter and things she says during intimacy; her terrible nightmares, her questionable scars in her back, and the coffin that remains closed.

Mistery grows even more when Luis meets Walter Downs (Thomas Jane), a private investigator from the U.S., paid by Julia's worried sister, who's apperance in the island threatens to invade and destroy the almost-perfect happiness that the couple have created in their new life together.

To Luis, loneliness takes him to love, which in turn lead to passion and breaks all reason. Both him and Julia become tangeled in a torturous and dangerous dance that take them both across the parts of Cuba until they reach obsession, eroticness, deceptions...and maybe, murder.

Gia [available on video 4.11.00]

CAST: Angelina Jolie as Gia Marie Carangi, Elizabeth Mitchell as Linda, Michael Cole, Mercedes Ruehl, Faye Dunaway, Kylie Travis

SYNOPSIS: The movie chronicles the rise and fall of model Gia Marie Carangi. Gia came to New York City as a 17 year-old punk rocker in the late-1970's and took the modeling world by storm. She had attitude, which was backed up by beauty. Her reign was short lived and after only nine years, in and out of the business, Gia died of AIDS at the age of 26. Her case was one of the first *documented* cases where acquired immunodeficiency virus was listed as the cause of death. Through a powerful and convincing performance by Angelina Jolie, we glimpse the tragedy of a young life lost.

MISCELLANEOUS INFO: Director: Michael Cristofer. Based on the book by Stephen Fried. Writers: Stephen Fired and Jay McInerney. Filming Locations: New York City and Los Angeles, California

REVIEW: This movie totally brought Angelina to my attention. After she won the Golden Globe (1999), I ran out and rented Gia. I was particularly drawn to the emotion she was able to convey throughout the movie. Particularly in scenes such as, when Katharine, Gia's mother, is leaving New York to return home. Incredible heart wrenching emotion, "But, I need you now!" and watching Gia cling to her mother one moment and the next kick her out. Powerful stuff, which really highlights Angelina's acting talents. Also, we really get a sense of Gia's venerability and need for love after her first night with Linda. In the hallway, naked, begging Linda to stay for breakfast. Truly a sad scene wonderfully understated, but clearly, depicted. All and all, Gia is a sad look into the world of modeling and drugs, but a wonderful example of Angelina Jolie's talents. (by Adrienne 1999)

Hell's Kitchen [available on 3.17.00]

CAST: Mekhi Phifer, Rosanna Arquette, William Forsythe, Angelina Jolie as Gloria McNeary, Johnny Whitworth, Stephen Payne, James Russo

SYNOPSIS: After his release from prison for a murder he didn't commit, Johnny (Mekhi Phifer) is confronted by the dead boy's sister Gloria (Angelina Jolie). Meanwhile, having witnessed the killing and fingered Johnny for it, Patty (Johnny Whitworth) is asked by Gloria to kill Johnny, but instead falls into a drug-addled stupor with Gloria's mother Liz (Rosanna Arquette). Oddly, for someone trained at the Actors' Studio Cinciripini has no sense of delicacy with any of his talent, and as a result the movie is less performed than bellowed (although it looks good). The one note of modulation is provided by William Forsythe as Lou, the ex-boxer for whom Johnny works at the 37th Street horse stables.

MISCELLANEOUS INFO: Directed and written by: Tony Cinciripini

CAST: Lainie Kazan, Joseph Bologna, Barbara Carrera, Renee Taylor, Angelina Jolie as Gina Malacici, William Hickey, Dick Van Patten, Abe Vigoda, Connie Stevens, Paul Sorvino.

SYNOPSIS: There are bad feelings between two Italian families who run competing Italian restaurants in the Bronx, and those relations don't improve when one family's son (Nathaniel Marston) and the other's daughter ("Hackers'" Angelina Jolie) fall in love during a production of the Shakespeare classic. Unwisely, Bologna and Taylor keep the focus of attention on the disputing adults (Bologna happens to play one of them, while Taylor portrays a goofy psychic) and away from the romantic couple. Lots of lame humor and uncomic contention ensue as the acting corps make sure never to let slip a chance to overplay their parts, making their turns as big and bangly as the bad jewelry and neo-'70s attire the women and men sport here. A closing sign of trouble: Though bearing a 1996 copyright at its end, the film has opening credits boast it "introduces" Angelina Jolie, who now has two major screen credits on her c.v. A strange film to be coming from art-houser Goldwyn, "Love Is All There Is" might prove a fitfully pleasant diversion for undemanding senior citizens and the Lawrence Welk crowd.
